A "NEW/OLD" party game for 2012

A Party Game with a Serious Purpose

Remember the old party game… If you were stranded on a desert island and you could take 1 other person, who would it be?  The current events and the coming 2012 date, are to me bringing up the very same type of  questions.  The process I have been taking myself through lately is very similar to this type of thought stream.  I have examined so far:

• Where will I locate my home and what criteria would make it the perfect location?

  1. The geographical location (i.e. Which State and in what section of the State)
  2. How close to a major population center would I want or need to be?
  3. What physical features or amenities would the property need to have?
  4. How easy will it be to maintain the property once it has been established?
  5. Is the home and property I have now capable of sustaining me for a unknown period of time (i.e. food, water, shelter, security)?

• What skills do I need to acquire to make myself more independent, self reliant and valuable to the community of which I am a part of?

  1. First Aid, home remedies, herbology etc.?
  2. Metalworking, welding, brazing, blacksmithing?
  3. Carpentry?
  4. Small engine repair?
  5. Veterinarian skills?
  6. Any type of repair or maintenance knowledge.

• What six people would I want to share my home and property with if need be?

  1. What skills would they bring with them?
  2. How reliable and independent are they?
  3. How trustworthy are they?
  4. Can I make room for more if need be?
  5. Can I make a tough decision if someone comes knocking at my door?

There are many more questions to ask myself and many more answers to find and moral dilemmas to deal with.  I do not; however, want to fall into the trap of - The Paralysis of Analysis!  Sometimes we can take up all our time reading and studying and analyzing to the point we just shut down entirely.  I have to constantly keep myself out of that trap, this is why I only presented a short list of 3 questions for now.  I also walk a razors edge between conservative cave dwelling nut and berry gatherer on the one hand and extremist, gun toting, razor wire compound survivalist on the other!  I just want a safe simple life with my family and friends.

Look at these questions and add your own questions as you feel comfortable with the answers you find.  Something that I have found useful in organizing my thoughts is called mind mapping.  No!  It's not some esoterical woo - woo thing that the feather and crystal crowd uses.  It's really useful software programs that allow you to organize and group your ideas.  I use a version called iMindMap and they offer a free trial version.  There are other free versions out there some are good and some are worthless and some are just plain hard to understand.  The iMindMap program is simple, for simple minded people like me

When you get your mind maps together maybe we can find a way to share them with the other folks who read this blog.  It would be great to learn from each other.  If you are already familiar with mind mapping and have suggestions on how to share maps or if you know of better software please let us know.
